That may soon change thanks to a new discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of scientists at the University of Chicago have figured out a way to keep a quantum computer system \u201ccoherent\u201d (or: operational) 10,000 times longer than before, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/early\/2020\/08\/12\/science.abc5186\">new study<\/a>&nbsp;published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Science<\/em>&nbsp;on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientists claim their solution could be applied to any other kind of quantum system and could end up revolutionizing the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis breakthrough lays the groundwork for exciting new avenues of research in quantum science,\u201d lead author David Awschalom, senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, said in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2020-08-scientists-quantum-states-longer.html\">a statement<\/a>. \u201cThe broad applicability of this discovery, coupled with a remarkably simple implementation, allows this robust coherence to impact many aspects of quantum engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2PT0nwR\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"484\" src=\"http:\/\/matrixshopping.com\/sell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/yuio-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matrixshopping.com\/sell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/yuio-1.png 646w, https:\/\/matrixshopping.com\/sell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/yuio-1-200x150.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2PT0nwR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SHOP OVER 10,000 ITEMS AND GET  24 HOUR DELIVERY <\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantum computers are infamously hard to keep under control. On the quantum level, qubits, the quantum equivalent of binary bits, are easily affected by their noisy surroundings. Anything from vibrations to temperature changes can throw the system out of whack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the solution has been to physically isolate the system from that noise \u2014 or up the purity of the materials used in the construction. They then tuned this magnetic field in just such a way, that the rest of the noise was simply tuned out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo get a sense of the principle, it\u2019s like sitting on a merry-go-round with people yelling all around you,\u201d Miao explained in the statement. \u201cWhen the ride is still, you can hear them perfectly, but if you\u2019re rapidly spinning, the noise blurs into a background.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of the new technique, the quantum system stayed \u201ccoherent,\u201d or operational, for 22 milliseconds. That may sound like an extremely short amount of time, but that\u2019s roughly 10,000 times longer than previous systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new technique, according to the scientists, will allow for future quantum machines to be scaled up more easily, and make storing information more practical.
